Anti-Social Media

Today I decided that I truly need a break from social media. No, I did not deactivate any of my accounts, but I did delete the apps from my phone and log off from everything on my computers so I will not be tempted to check status' and see how many notifications I got from a particular post. Yes, I believe my blog is linked with all of my accounts, so if you are reading this on a social site… that is how this got posted. This blog post is a random rant, I feel like I have been wanting to vent about for a long time. It is not well thought out, I am just letting my fingers stroke the keyboard as my thoughts and feelings race around.

Social Media.

I have a love/hate relationship with it. I love that I can keep in contact with my friends and loved ones across the country. I love that I have such immediate access to everyone's successes in life. I love that I can see a shit ton of selfies and fancy photos, the tasty dinner my "friends" ate last night, rants and opinions about what is going on in the news, and whatever else is flooding my news feed… but it is getting to be a bit too much. Regardless of what is being posted... good and/or bad, I have noticed that social media is a quick way to get unhappy. It is a quick way to draw comparisons between my life and someone elses. It is a quick way to judge my progress towards my goals, to form resentments towards the fact that maybe I am not as far along with certain things as I wanted to be at this point in time.

I have been told (and I know) not compare myself to anyone else, especially on Social Media. Regardless of what the people I know are posting about, I also need a break from the constant reminders of some of the horrible things going on in the world. I am not naïve enough to disregard the current events, I just don’t need to get sad and afraid every single time I turn on my computer. Therefore, I have decided to go on a "Social Media Detox" until 2016.

I want to use the next month and a half to focus on me, being present in my reality. I want to dedicate my free time to things that are meaningful and move me in the right direction towards my goals in life. A few things I have in mind….

  • Complete my RYT 200 Certification
  • Spend more time with people I love
  • Read a good book or two
  • Take the time to acknowledge the Christmas season
  • Be present without feeling the need to share a status update or photo with the Internet
  • Etc.
