When you hear the word "beauty" and "beautiful" what is the first thing that comes into your head? Most of us probably think of glamour, elegance, flawlessness, perfection, etc… I know I do. For fun, I looked up the word Beauty in the dictionary and here is what I found:
- the quality of being physically attractive
- The qualities in a person or thing that give pleasure to the senses or the mind
- a beautiful woman
Yep…I am not surprised.
Society has hardwired us to see true beauty in a certain way. [To be blunt, I think that is bull shiiiiit]. I think so many people are fixated on that definition, that it is naturally difficult for us to associate beauty with anything other than superficial qualities...
But what if we could?
What if we were able to look past the standard definition of beauty and associate the word to other areas in our lives?
How about our mistakes, our flaws, our quirky habits? Or our uniqueness, our courage and our strength?
Think about this: There are over 7.26 billion people in the world, but there is only one YOU… and that in itself is beautiful. We all uniquely different, and whether or not you believe it, you have a lot to offer the people in the world around you.
A while back, I came across a list titled: 50 Reasons Why YOU Are Absolutely Beautiful (written by: Linnea Jensen-Stewart) on a great website elephantjournal.com. I thought this list was perfect, because it looks at beauty from all angles.
Take a look at the list, and truly think about each number. What are some of the "reasons" that appeal to you?
-You are beautiful when you are afraid to do something, and you do it anyway.
-If you have been to hell and back, your resilience is beautiful.
-Beauty is a daring action. One that is built on your authentic intention instead of being attached to the outcome.
-Asking questions—especially “why?”—is always beautiful. Why? Because curiosity is beautiful.
-If you can string words together into a sentence, and you’re brave enough to let someone else read it, that’s beautiful.
-Flat stomachs are beautiful, absolutely, but big, soft bellies are beautiful, too.
-It is beautiful to speak another language. It is beautiful to try.
-Beauty is putting paint on canvas, or strumming a guitar, or capturing a stunning moment in a picture, or dancing with your eyes closed.
-Creating is always beautiful.
-Your eyes are beautiful. Nobody else has eyes like yours. They are deep and authentic and instantly recognizable.
-Beauty is being brave enough to embrace your feelings- the good, the bad, and the ugly. To open yourself to the possibility that there is something magnificent there.
-Remember the time your best friend called you crying? Because only your voice could calm her down? That was beautiful.
-Beauty is laughing so hard your stomach hurts.
-Beauty is not letting ignorance be mistaken for truth. Even if you’re the one in the dark.
-Beauty is calling someone out for saying something hurtful, even if you weren’t the one getting hurt.
